Day 2 – From Noja to Santillana del Mar

Today, after a delicious breakfast, we set off again at 9:30 am in the direction of Santander. The weather forecast said it would be cooler and we didn’t actually have to battle the heat today. Perfect!

Today we start in a pink jersey. The bikes are ready and the legs are still fit.

Even before we had ridden the first 10 km, we had to climb the first mountain and had the first 220 m on the speedometer before 10:30 am. Ohhhh, if it goes on like this, I’ll need a rescue tent at the finish!

Stephan said I had ridden up the hills sooo slowly that his bike couldn’t ride that slowly without falling over (I think he was just jealous of my 4km/h馃槀)

Relax up the hill and pedal for pedal.
Short break and route planning in the shade.
We make the streets unsafe!

Following the recommendation of our hotel manager from Noja, we decided to take the ferry from Pedre帽a to Santander instead of driving the planned kilometers via Camargo. That was definitely a good decision, because the ferry was really great again this time!

Bicycles are leaned against the wall and now it’s time to enjoy the view.
The city in the distance is Santander.
Cute fishing boats everywhere and, of course, many miles of beaches.

In Santander, we first looked for a bar for lunch and found one in the Plaza Porticada right in the city center. Santander is a beautiful and large city. I even saw the university (a possibility for a doctorate? Who knows?) The problem was then getting out of Santander again. It took us almost 1h30min to get back on our route. Ufff!

Santander is so beautiful and definitely worth a visit.
Many bays can be found on the outskirts of Santander.
Finally out of Santander onto a long paved cycle road. It’s quite a difference riding in the city or in the countryside!

Now it’s time to drive the last few kilometers on the national road to get to our destination. At 16:10 we drove into Santillana del Mar. The name of the village is deceptive, as there is no beach here – it’s a real fossil! Santillana del Mar is centuries old and full of cobblestones.

Looks nice. But it’s difficult if the hotel is in the old town and you have to walk with clipless pedals.
Explore the city after the tour
Cute little stalls dotted around the village.

We let the day come to an end. We are still motivated and as I write this report I am enjoying my lemonade.

Conclusion of today: When your legs beg you to stop, that’s when the fun really begins.
