Day 4 – From Llanes to Llastres

Day 4 starts with an early breakfast so that we can set off towards Ribadesella at around 9:00 am. It’s only 30 km there and mostly flat. Worth mentioning here are the Picos de Europa, a trio of mountains that are up to 3000 m high.

Take a relaxed drive to Ribadesella.
The Picos de Europa in the background. Unfortunately, the peaks are in the clouds, so you can’t see the full extent of the mountains.
Found lots of little hidden beaches along the way (it’s not called a coastal tour for nothing)

After just under 1.5 hours, we arrived in Ribadesella. As Stephan had already been here on vacation with Pilar, he was keen to show me the hotel and the beach where they had stayed. The beach was actually quite full of people, although the weather was only moderate.

Arrived in Ribadesella. Behind us you can see the harbor.
The beach Stephan wanted to show me. The photo doesn’t actually show any people now… bad section selected🫣

From Ribadesella onwards, the mountain climbing began. The meters of altitude had to come from somewhere. But the fact that this would mean several 17% gradients almost sent me to the other side several times.

Driving up the mountain. The only living creatures we see are chickens.
But high up you also have the best views of the sea!
Beautiful long road along the coast.

As all the bays with beaches are always at the bottom of the water, you always have to drive down and then up again. But if you’re doing the tour, you also have to drive to the beaches… don’t you?

Short pit stop on the beach at Arenal de Mois.
Recharge your batteries for the last few kilometers.

The last 17 km to get to our destination in Llastres. This was quite a leg-breaker because the village is in the mountains and we had to ride in with a 10-12% gradient.

You climb so many meters and still have to give yourself the rest to get to the finish. (The last part is marked red/yellow, which means 7-10%)

We finally made it to Llandres at around 2pm. As we were there quite early and the sun was shining, we first went to the beach to cool off. That was necessary!!!

Llandres. Small but beautiful. This is the view from our balcony. Very nice!

All we have to do today is rest. Stephan has already fallen asleep on the beach. He’s having a good time… I’ve already jumped into the water twice.

Conclusion of the day: If you already have your destination in sight, but there’s still a long way to go, then that’s pretty stupid.
