Today, we set out on the second leg of our journey from Bosau on Lake Plön toward Vizdorf on the island of Fehmarn.
At 9 a.m., we set off toward Malente for breakfast. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a bakery in Bosau. That means we’ll have to pedal 12 km to get there.

Once we arrive in Malente, we start with a delicious breakfast to recharge our batteries. Here we also run into two other road cyclists who are carrying only a small bag and look much more athletic than we do (they had some serious calves!).

Then we continued on toward Oldenburg. Riding along beautiful bike paths, the two of us pedaled leisurely through the countryside. The closer we got to the coast, the more we could see the water (hurrah!!!). Around 1 p.m., it started to get warmer, and you could really feel the heat. There’s only one thing to do: pour water on your head and keep a cool head.

Once we arrive in Oldenburg, the first thing we do is get some ice cream. It’s getting warmer and warmer, and we need to drink plenty of fluids. Then we rest in the shade.

Now the fun begins. We ride our bikes across the bridge to Fehmarn. It’s a narrow bike path, but the view is really nice. Luckily, no one’s coming toward us, so we can ride at a leisurely pace.

Then it’s just the last few kilometers through Burg on Fehmarn and on to Vilzdorf. In Burg on Fehmarn, we’re held up by a parade of Bully cars driving through the island and throwing a loud party (loud music, lots of honking, great atmosphere).

After a 4-hour ride, 86 km, 330 meters of elevation gain, and plenty of sunshine (no rain, and the forecast thunderstorm never came either!), we finally arrive in Vilzdorf.
We’re staying here with friends of Merle’s parents and will wrap up the evening with a barbecue together. Tomorrow we’ll take the ferry to Denmark!!

Takeaway of the day: Strength lies in calmness.

(P.S.: If anyone points out in the comments that the displayed kilometers don’t add up to 86 km, it’s because the first few kilometers weren’t recorded, unfortunately. But I did ride them! I’m not cheating here.)
