Stage 3 – From Vitzdorf to Guldborg

Today, we set out on our third tour from Vitzdorf on Fehmarn to Guldborg in Denmark.

Since our ferry wasn’t scheduled until around 12:45 p.m., we spent quite a while at Merle’s friends’ farm and enjoyed a delicious breakfast with them. So engrossed in pleasant conversation, we finally realized around 11:40 a.m. that we really needed to start heading toward the ferry. We really had to hurry to make it on time (12 km in 25 minutes!!)

Hurry to the ferry!
The “rocket” on the bike (that’s what we call our luggage on the back because it looks like a rocket) keeps us moving.

We make it to the ferry right on time. We even have to wait half an hour here because cyclists are the last to be let on. In total, there are the two of us and another girl (Kylie), who’s on her first solo backpacking trip on a gravel bike. She’s really nice, and we chat the whole way.

In front of the ferry.
Let’s go in!!!
The bikes are now leaning against the wall. Now let’s head out onto the deck!
The wind is blowing. You can tell it’s getting windier.

So, we’ve arrived in Denmark now. From here on out, it’s a leisurely ride across the island of Lolland. The roads stretch for kilometers, and everything is super flat. We’re battling strong winds and taking turns drafting.

Beautiful paved roads.
Downtown Maribo.

Maribo is really beautiful, and we decide to take a short break here. All that headwind is already sapping a lot of our energy.

Bikes parked. This is where we take a break.

Then we’re off again: the final 23 km, finally heading toward Guldborg.

Sakskøbing Harbor. Merle thinks she’s been here before on a sailboat (she checked her logbook—it turns out she wasn’t right at all 😝)
Here’s what our outlook looks like.
Be sure to give a clear hand signal so Merle knows which way to go.
The last 3 km!

After 3 hours and 6 minutes, 67 km, and an incredible 45 meters of elevation gain (all of which came at the start during our sprint), we arrive at our campsite in Guldborg.

We’ll be spending the night in this little cabin. (Where are the bikes? Let us know in the comments if you find them!)

The woman at the front desk recommends a short hike along the coast (4 km). That means a quick change of clothes, put on our shoes, and off we go. Through the forest, along the coast, and finally through the harbor, we get a great view of the Baltic Sea and Guldborg.

We’re stylish, of course—with our flip-flops (in case we jump in the water! SPOILER: We didn’t—the current was too strong.)
The Baltic Sea coast.
Port of Guldborg.

First, we’re going to cook up some delicious pasta, and we bought ourselves a chocolate cake 👀 (with all this exercise, we don’t have to worry about calories)

Photo shoot with the cake.
Yummy pasta (we’re hungry)

That’s all for today. Tomorrow we’re heading toward Rødvig. Copenhagen is now only 123 km away via the highway.

Conclusion of the day (quoted directly from Merle’s scale): Your muscle mass is within the average range, but it could be higher.

P.S.: The whole cake is already gone!
