Stage 1 – From Horst (Holstein) to Bosau on Lake Plön

Today we set out on our first tour from Horst to Bosau on Lake Plön.

The mood is great! Here we go!

Today had a few surprises in store for us: after waiting for the rain to pass in the morning, we left Horst around 9:30, only to have our first flat tire after 8 km.

They’re working hard to change the hose. The casing is so tight and really hard to remove.

Thanks to some help from Merle’s cousin and a (chocolate) ice cream later, we were back in action by noon—until the same inner tube burst again about 10 minutes later. Due to the midday heat (almost 34 degrees!!!), we ended up taking a long walk back to Barmstedt (3 km in the blazing heat, walking while pushing the bike), where the same bike mechanic was then able to patch the same inner tube.

What could be better than going for a bike ride when it’s 33 degrees?
With all this back-and-forth, let’s start with a BIG ice cream

We then rode back from there to Elmshorm to make up for lost time on the Regio (unfortunately, it was already 2:00 p.m.). At a whopping 160 km/h (according to the bike computer), we headed into beautiful Neumünster, where Ainhoa repacked her luggage in front of the police station.

We finally set off toward Lake Plön on great paved roads. About 20 km and an hour later, we refueled at Lidl so we could enjoy the last 20 km through Holstein Switzerland as the sun steadily set. The final stretch in particular—through hilly woods with perfect pavement, as well as along bike paths offering views of Lake Plön—was a real highlight.

A nice ride along the paved roads
A quick stop at Lidl. Bottom line: Lidl is worth it!

Along the way, we got to know a whole bunch of towns whose names start with “B”: Bönebüttel, Bornhöved, Bredenbek, and finally Bosau. So, after 65 km and a nine-hour odyssey by bike, car, Deutsche Bahn, and on foot, we were finally able to wrap up our first leg in style—with a swim in the surprisingly refreshing Lake Plön, a cold apple spritzer, and pizza with cheese (it wasn’t removed—there was no tip 😝).

After swimming, it’s time for a photo shoot!

Tomorrow, the two of us will be heading on to Fehmarn! The mood is still pretty good🥴

Part 2 of the route. 9 km to the train station, and then the rest from Neumünster
